Personal Cyber Insurance — FAQs
Key information & product guidance
This panel provides important information about the OSR Home Cyber Plus insurance product to help you make an informed decision before purchasing. Please read these FAQs carefully. If you have further questions, please contact us before taking out a policy.
What is Personal Cyber Insurance?
Personal Cyber Insurance (also known as Home Cyber Plus) is an insurance policy designed to protect you as an individual against financial losses and other consequences arising from cyber-related incidents in your personal life. Unlike commercial cyber insurance — which is designed for businesses — this product is specifically tailored for private individuals and households. It covers events such as identity theft, online fraud, cyber extortion, and unauthorised access to your devices or accounts.
What does this policy cover?
The policy provides coverage across several key areas:
- Identity Fraud: Covers financial losses and legal costs resulting from someone fraudulently using your personal identity.
- Social Engineering / Phishing: Covers losses from being deceived into transferring money or revealing sensitive information online.
- Cyber Extortion: Covers costs arising from a threat to release your personal data or disable your devices unless a ransom is paid.
- Digital Device Replacement: Covers the cost of replacing a personal internet-connected device that has been damaged or destroyed as a direct result of a cyber attack.
- Media Liability: Covers legal liability arising from content you post online (e.g. defamation or copyright infringement).
- Online Counselling: Provides access to up to 10 hours of counselling with a qualified professional registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) following a cyber incident.
Who is this product for?
This product is designed for private individuals residing in the United Kingdom who want to protect themselves and their household against personal cyber risks. It is not a commercial product and does not cover activities related to a business, trade, or profession. Cover may also extend to students who are registered at a UK university or college and live at both the named insured's address and a term-time address.
How much cover is available?
You can choose from two levels of cover:
- £10,000 cover — suitable for individuals looking for essential personal cyber protection.
- £20,000 cover — suitable for those who want a higher level of protection, particularly if you manage significant digital assets or online accounts.
All cover limits are inclusive of all costs, expenses, and other amounts covered under the policy, except where stated otherwise in any endorsements.
What is NOT covered by this policy?
There are important exclusions you should be aware of:
- Devices used primarily for business, trade, or professional purposes.
- Devices that are more than 10 years old at the time of the incident.
- Devices that were already not functioning before the cyber incident occurred.
- Devices covered by a valid manufacturer's warranty or another specific insurance policy (unless that cover has been exhausted).
- Losses arising from a simple malfunction of your devices that is not caused by a cyber attack.
- Wear and tear or gradual deterioration of your devices or data assets.
- Losses caused by war, terrorism, or nuclear events.
Please read the full policy wording carefully to understand all exclusions before purchasing.
Is this a claims-made policy?
Yes. This policy is written on a claims-made and reported basis. This means the policy only covers losses that are first discovered during the policy period, or within 30 days after the end of the policy period. Losses discovered outside of this window will not be covered, even if the underlying cyber incident occurred during the policy period. It is important you report any incidents as soon as you become aware of them.
What is the excess and how does it work?
An excess is the amount you must pay towards each claim before the insurer pays out. The applicable excess for this policy is stated in your policy Schedule. The excess applies separately to each individual claim or loss event. If a single claim attaches to more than one section of cover, the maximum excess you will pay is the highest applicable single excess — you will not be charged multiple excesses for the same event.
How do I make a claim?
If you need to make a claim or require assistance following a cyber incident, you should contact the claims team as soon as possible. Representatives are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can reach the claims team by:
- Email: OSR@dynarisk.com
Please report incidents promptly, as late reporting may affect your ability to claim under this claims-made policy.
What is Dynarisk and do I need to register my devices?
Dynarisk is a cyber security monitoring platform. While registration is not a mandatory condition of cover, the insurer strongly recommends that you register your internet-connected devices with Dynarisk at the start of your policy period to get the best possible cyber security coverage. You can register a maximum of 10 devices. You should also update Dynarisk if any of your devices change during the policy period. For registration queries, contact: OSR@dynarisk.com.
